Our Commitment to Sustainable & Regenerative Tourism
For the Halmahera North Maluku Society, sustainability is not an initiative; it is the fundamental principle upon which our entire company is built. We believe that our presence in this pristine and fragile environment comes with a profound responsibility. Our goal is to move beyond simple ‘sustainable’ practices, which aim to do no harm, towards a model of ‘regenerative’ tourism, which actively seeks to improve the environmental and social fabric of Halmahera. Every journey we design is an investment in the future of the island.
Our policies are comprehensive, transparent, and integral to our operations, as detailed in Our Methodology. We are committed to ensuring that the unparalleled beauty of Halmahera can be experienced by generations to come.
Environmental Commitments
Carbon Neutral Operations
We acknowledge that travel has a carbon footprint. To address this, we have committed to making every client journey 100% carbon neutral. We meticulously calculate the emissions from all associated travel—including international and domestic flights, yacht fuel, and vehicle usage—and invest in high-quality, verified carbon offset projects. We partner with organizations like the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve in Borneo, a REDD+ project that protects vital peat swamp forests and supports local communities.
Marine Conservation & The Coral Triangle
Halmahera lies at the epicentre of the Coral Triangle, the most biodiverse marine region on Earth. We have a duty to protect it. A percentage of the revenue from every marine-based journey is donated directly to WWF Indonesia’s marine conservation programs in the region. Our guides, trained by marine biologists, enforce strict no-touch/no-anchor policies on sensitive reefs and actively participate in reef health monitoring programs like Coral Watch.
Elimination of Single-Use Plastics
We have a zero-tolerance policy for single-use plastics across all our operations and those of our partners. Clients are provided with high-quality reusable water bottles and tote bags upon arrival. Our entire supply chain, from our partner villas to our phinisi yachts, utilizes filtered water dispensers and non-plastic alternatives for all amenities.
Ethical Wildlife Encounters
We guarantee that all wildlife viewing is done ethically and responsibly. In partnership with Burung Indonesia (BirdLife Indonesia), our birdwatching guides are trained to prioritize the well-being of the birds, maintaining safe distances and never using baiting or calls that disrupt natural behaviors. We strictly adhere to all regulations set by the BKSDA (Natural Resources Conservation Agency) for interacting with wildlife in protected areas.
Community Commitments
Local Employment & Fair Wages
We believe that the most direct way to ensure communities value conservation is to make them the primary economic beneficiaries of tourism. We are committed to:
- A ‘Local First’ Hiring Policy: Over 80% of our on-the-ground staff, including guides, drivers, and boat crew, are hired from local communities in North Maluku.
- Fair Compensation: All our employees and the staff of our core partners receive wages that are significantly above the regional minimum wage (UMR), along with full health insurance (BPJS Kesehatan) and social security (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan).
- Capacity Building: We invest in continuous training for our local team, from English language and hospitality skills to Wilderness First Aid and marine conservation certifications.
Community Development Fund
We have established the Juara Halmahera Community Fund. A fixed portion of our profits is allocated to this fund, which supports grassroots projects identified in partnership with village leaders. Current projects include providing educational materials for a school in a remote Tobelo village and funding a waste management and recycling program in Jailolo.
Supporting Local Enterprises
We actively integrate local businesses into our supply chain. We source fresh produce from local organic farms, commission traditional Sahu ikat weavings and Ternatean spices for client gifts, and ensure that any cultural experiences directly compensate the host community, avoiding exploitative ‘poverty tourism’ models.
Transparency & Reporting
We believe in accountability. Annually, we will publish an Impact Report detailing our progress towards these goals, including the total amount of carbon offset, funds donated to conservation partners, and outcomes of our community projects. Our commitment to transparency is further outlined in our Editorial Standards.
When you travel with us to Halmahera Island, you are not just a visitor; you are a partner in its preservation.

Safeguarding Halmahera’s unparalleled biodiversity
Imagine the vibrant kaleidoscope of a pristine coral reef, teeming with life, or the chorus of exotic birds echoing through ancient rainforests – this is the raw, untamed beauty of Halmahera, a treasure we are fiercely committed to preserving. Halmahera is strategically positioned within two of the planet’s most critical biodiversity hotspots: the Coral Triangle, the global epicenter of marine biodiversity, and Wallacea, a biogeographical region renowned for its high degree of endemism. This unique confluence gifts the island with an astonishing array of flora and fauna, from over 76% of the world’s coral species to unique terrestrial creatures found nowhere else on Earth.
Our commitment extends deep into these ecosystems. In the marine realm, we actively support local marine protected areas, enforcing strict no-touch and responsible diving/snorkeling protocols to safeguard delicate coral formations and their inhabitants. Guests participate in these efforts by observing marine life respectfully, contributing to data collection, and even joining hands-on coral restoration projects in designated areas. On land, our expeditions are guided by experts who ensure minimal impact on the rainforests, protecting crucial habitats for endemic bird species like the magnificent Standardwing Bird-of-Paradise and other elusive wildlife. We operate with a fundamental understanding that our presence must contribute to the health and resilience of these vital natural assets.
Beyond direct conservation, our approach integrates comprehensive waste management systems, reducing our environmental footprint across all operations. We prioritize renewable energy sources where feasible and advocate for sustainable land-use practices within our sphere of influence. Every journey with us becomes an active contribution to scientific research and local conservation initiatives, directly funding efforts to monitor species populations, combat illegal wildlife trade, and restore degraded habitats. Our guests become partners in this grand endeavor, witnessing firsthand the delicate balance of nature and the profound impact of dedicated stewardship.
Empowering local communities and celebrating cultural heritage
True regenerative tourism transcends environmental protection; it is deeply rooted in empowering the people who call Halmahera home. Our philosophy ensures that the economic benefits of luxury tourism flow directly into local communities, fostering sustainable livelihoods and enhancing quality of life. We prioritize direct employment for island residents, from expert local guides and hospitality staff to boat captains and chefs, ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions, and opportunities for professional growth. Through comprehensive training programs in hospitality management, English language proficiency, and sustainable agriculture, we equip individuals with valuable skills that extend far beyond the tourism sector.
Furthermore, we are steadfast in our commitment to local sourcing. By procuring fresh produce, sustainably caught seafood, and authentic handicrafts directly from Halmahera’s farmers, fishermen, and artisans, we inject vital capital into the island’s micro-economies. This not only supports local enterprises but also preserves traditional skills and crafts that might otherwise fade. Our guests have the unique opportunity to engage in respectful cultural exchanges, perhaps learning traditional cooking techniques, visiting local villages with elder permission, or witnessing age-old ceremonies that offer a profound insight into the island’s rich heritage and the diverse ethnic groups, such as the Tobelo and Galela, who shape its vibrant identity.
Our dedication to community impact extends to broader social investments. We partner with local organizations to fund essential initiatives in education, healthcare, and clean water access for partner villages, aiming to build long-term resilience and self-sufficiency. For instance, we have supported the establishment of community learning centers and contributed to improving sanitation infrastructure in remote areas. This holistic approach ensures that every aspect of our operation contributes positively to the social fabric of Halmahera, creating a legacy of shared prosperity and mutual respect that truly embodies the spirit of regenerative travel.
